Founded in 1924, Ocean University of China (OUC) is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education (MOE), which offers a complete range of disciplines with unique strengths in oceanography and fisheries. It is part of the country’s Project 985 (Top 39 universities in China) and Project 211 (Top 100 universities in China). In 2017, it was selected in Class A of China’s national strategy of establishing first-class universities of the world.
OUC is subdivided into four campuses, among which Laoshan, Yushan and Fushan campuses cover a total area of more than 2,400 mu (1 mu ≈ 666.67 m2). The West Coast campus is planned with an area of about 2,800 mu, and its first phase construction was completed and opened in September 2022. OUC has 21 colleges/schools and one Teaching Center for Fundamental Courses. At present, there are more than 35,400 students in OUC, including more than 17,200 undergraduates, 14,500 master's students, 3,400 doctoral students, and 1000 international students.
OUC is qualified to grant the Chinese Government Scholarship, International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, Marine Scholarship of China, Credit Student Scholarship for the China-US Humanities Exchange, CSC's Scholarship for Exchange Students from Europe, and Qingdao Government Scholarship for international students in China. It also offers the President Scholarship of Ocean University of China for international students.
According to the ESI database, OUC is among the top 1% most-cited universities and institutions in 12 research fields including geoscience, botany and zoology, engineering, chemistry, materials science, agricultural science, biology and biochemistry, environmental science and ecology, pharmacology and toxicology, microbiology, computer science, and social science.
OUC is known as one of the "most beautiful campuses in China". Wandering in the campus, one can enjoy the towering old trees, and European-style buildings under the blue sky, which together make the most beautiful picture like a dreamland.
In 2016, OUC was among the first batch of universities to pass the Quality Certification of Studying in China.
