Established on October 2nd, 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University (TJU) is the first university in China and one of the National Key Universities directly under the administration of Ministry of Education. It has a long reputation at home and abroad for its school motto of “Seeking Truth from Facts”, its guideline of “Precise in Learning and Strict in Teaching” and its tradition of “Patriotism and Dedication”. TJU is among the first 16 National Key Universities designated by the government in 1959, and is also among the first group of universities to be included into the "211" and "985" Projects of national investment for developing world class universities. In 2017, TJU is selected as “Double First-Class University Plan” by the government. Tianjin University is ranked 201st-250th in the 2024 THE University Rankings and 285th in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.
The University has two campuses—Weijin Campus and Peiyang Campus, which cover a total area of 3.80 million square meters. At present, TJU has 27 schools and colleges, 18864 full-time undergraduate students, 9727 master students, 4822doctoral students, 3624 international students, and 4869 faculty and staff members. Now there are 66 undergraduate programs, 43 first-level mater’s programs, 31 fist-level doctoral programs, and 30 post-doctoral research programs.
Through unremitting efforts, TJU has developed a disciplinary layout that integrates engineering harmoniously with sciences, management, education, economics, medicine, law, and liberal arts. Fourteen disciplines rank the world’s top 1% of ESI, and four disciplines, namely, Materials Science and Chemistry, Computer Science rank the world’s top 1‰ of ESI, Engineering ranks the world’s top 0.1‰. The University has also forged strategic partnership with 260 universities, research institutes and companies in 50 countries, and has built 2 Confucius Institutes in Australia, Slovak and France respectively.
Besides, many programs in TJU have passed the international accreditation, such as the AMBA and IchemE. Particularly, Tianjin International Engineering Institute (TIEI), which was founded collaboratively with Nice Sophia Antipolis University in May 2014, was accredited by CTI for 6 years (the highest level) in July 2017.
